Hello Maria, tell us a little about yourself and your background in filmmaking
Hi! My name is Maria Saveleva, artist and director. And I do believe in miracles. I graduated from Saint Petersburg State Art and Industry Academy (graphics and illustration, 2010-2016) and Estonian Academy of Arts (animation, 2018-2020).

I have been a participant of many festivals and exhibitions such as Poff, Animateka, БФМ (BFM) and InArte Fabriano,

How did Moon first come together as a project?
A Swiss band called Pfistermen's Friends contacted me with a request to make an animated video clip for their music. I liked the music a lot, so gladly agreed to make it.

I had several ideas about what it could be, so we ended up with a dance theme to emphasize the music and rhythm. Also, as the clip is called Moon, I wanted to create a 'zero gravity' atmosphere, where the creatures are dancing and flying. You can see two asexual dancing creatures in the video, these are two sides of our self: an eternal dance with the self.

How did the animation come together? How long did it all take?
I had a very tight deadline for the clip - just a couple of months. So, with my team, we managed to do it. This is hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation, pencil on paper.

The long haired figures in the video are instantly iconic. What was your inspiration for this design?
I think I was inspired by Estonian animation. And also.. you know, those rubber dancing toys at gas stations.

What projects are coming for you in the future?
I recently finished the cartoon about a kiwi (bird), 'You Are Not a Kiwi', and am now working with some friends on a series of ironic and satirical short cartoons about the Corona crisis and politics. Let's see how it will turn out (already looks interesting in production) and if I will be lucky to find a producer for it!

Also I just finished my internship at Krutart studio in Prague, in the Czech Republic.

Do you have any message for our Melbourne audience?
Warm greetings to the Melbourne audience! Stay healthy and sound, and enjoy the films, Cheers!
